Dr. Gopal Raman Sharma is a Nepalese neurosurgeon and professor, currently serving as the head of the Department of Neurosciences at Nepal Mediciti Hospital, Sainbu, Bhaisepati, Lalitpur. He is also the chief consultant neurosurgeon at Dirghayu Guru Hospital & Research Center Pvt Ltd, Mitrapark, Chabahil. Previously, he was a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Bir Hospital, and a visiting professor at Nepal Medical College, Atterkhel, Jorpati, Kathmandu.
Dr. Sharma graduated in medicine and surgery from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), TUTH, Kathmandu, Nepal in 1990. In 1991, he joined the Nepal Government service and worked in remote districts for two years before being transferred to Bir Hospital, where he began working in the Department of Neurosurgery. He completed his neurosurgical residency at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi, Pakistan, and in 2000, he was awarded a Master’s Degree (MS) in Neurosurgery from Karachi University, Pakistan.
After returning to Nepal, Dr. Sharma continued his work in the Department of Neurosurgery at NAMS, Bir Hospital. He later pursued a fellowship in neurovascular surgery at Kurume University, Japan in 2010 and completed neurovascular training at the Department of Neurosurgery, Helsinki University, Finland in 2013. In 2014, he received a Fellowship (FICS) in Neurosurgery from the International College of Surgeons, USA. In 2017, he was recognized as an International Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (IFAANS) by AANS, USA.
Dr. Sharma has been deeply involved in both clinical practice and academic activities. His areas of interest include neurovascular and skull base surgery. He has successfully performed over 18,000 major neurosurgical procedures to date, including more than 500 microsurgical clippings of cerebral aneurysms and over 50 cerebral AVM excisions with excellent results.
He has attended more than 100 national and international neurosurgical conferences, presenting over 135 scientific papers. Additionally, Dr. Sharma has delivered 44 guest lectures on topics including cerebral aneurysms, AVMs, and skull base tumor surgeries, and has chaired many scientific sessions. He has also actively organized and participated in various neurosurgical workshops.
Dr. Sharma has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in both national and international neurosurgical journals. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including the “OV Jooma Gold Medal” (1997), “Birendra – Aishwarya Medal” (2001), “B & B Best Paper Award” (2002), and “Best Doctor of the Year Award” (2007, 2011) by NAMS, Bir Hospital. In 2017, he was awarded the "PRABAL JANASEWASHREE" medal by the Honorable President of Nepal.
Dr. Sharma is a life member of the Nepal Medical Association (NMA), Society of Surgeons of Nepal (SSN), and a founding member of the Nepalese Society of Neurosurgeons (NESON). He is also a member of the World Federation of Neurosurgeons (WFNS), the European Neurosurgical Society (EANS), the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS), and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). Recently, he became a member of the AANS/CNS Cerebrovascular Chapter and the Vascular Neurosurgery Section of EANS.
In 2020, Dr. Sharma founded the “Gopal Raman Sharma Neurovascular Oration” and the “Gopal Raman Sharma Young Neurosurgeon Award” to promote neurovascular surgery and encourage young neurosurgeons in Nepal. The Young Neurosurgeon Award is given annually at the National Congress of NESON for the best paper, while the Neurovascular Oration Medal is awarded to a national or international neurosurgeon who has made significant contributions to the field of neurovascular surgery.
Dr. Sharma is a Past President of the Nepalese Society of Neurosurgeons (NESON) and a Past General Secretary of the South Asian Association of Neurosurgical Societies (SAANS). He chaired the neurovascular chapter of NESON from 2017 to 2020. In the future, Dr. Sharma aims to establish specialized neurosurgery services in Nepal.
